Market Trends: Week of 30 November 2015

Wishing Everyone a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- The Palmetto/Ruskin fields continue in full production.  Immokalee fields have also started producing.  The west continues to be forced to come to the east to meet demand.  However, demand continues to be generally weak. FOB prices are steady with downward pressure on 6x6s and 6x7s.  Quality continues to be good.

Romas- Demand is moderate as the west continues to come east to meet demand.  Supplies are better which has caused FOB prices to fall a couple of dollars on all sizes.  Quality in the east is good.

Grapes- FOB prices are generally steady on the 12/1 flats and are down on the bulk.  Quality is good.

Cherries- Demand is weak.  FOB prices are lower this week.  Quality is good.

Weather forecast- Palmetto/Ruskin- Partly cloudy to sunny skies for the rest of the week with highs near 80 and lows in the low 60s.  Little chance of rain.  Immokalee- Same as Palmetto/Ruskin but skies will see more sun.

West/Mexico

Rounds- The West continues to look to Florida to meet their demand for mature greens.  Vine-ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and Nogales.  Crossings continue to be abnormally light.

Romas- Slightly more supplies are available but volume is still so light that no USDA quote is given and most suppliers are going east to meet demand.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality.  Grapes are crossing at Baja and Nogales with light volume and most repackers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Cherries- Limited supplies continue and there continues to be a wide range of prices due to a wide range of quality.  But like the grape tomatoes, most repackers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Market Trends: Week of 23 November 2015

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- The Palmetto/Ruskin fields are in full production.  FOB prices have fallen by several dollars again this week on all sizes.  Quality continues to be good.

Romas- Roma supplies continue to be extremely tight in the west which is putting pressure on the tight supplies in the east.  FOB prices are therefore seeing upward pressure.  Quality in the east is good.

Grapes- FOB prices are generally steady on bulk while the pints are seeing some downward pressure.  Quality is good.

Cherries- Supplies remain generally tight.  Quality is variable with the best quality bringing a premium.  FOB prices for quality cherries are seeing upward pressures.

Weather forecast- Palmetto/Ruskin- Daytime highs will be in the 80s with lows near 70.  Skies will be mostly cloudy with a good chance of storms through the weekend.  Immokalee- Cloudy skies with a good chance of storms through the weekend.  High near 90 tomorrow falling to the upper 70s by Sunday.  Lows will be near 70 in the middle of the week falling to the low 60s by Sunday night.

West/Mexico

Rounds- CA growers have finished for the season.  The West is going to Florida to meet their demand for mature greens.  Vine-ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and Nogales.  Cooler than normal weather has caused yields to suffer and volume at all crossings points is generally light.

Romas- The cool weather has cut severely into Baja crossings and supplies are extremely tight at all crossing points.  Volume is so light that no USDA quote is given and most suppliers are going east to meet demand.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality.  Grapes are crossing at Baja and Nogales but most re-packers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Cherries- Limited supplies continue and there continues to be a wide range of prices due to a wide range of quality.  But like the grape tomatoes, most re-packers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Beans, Green

Supplies in California are all about  one for the season. This means Georgia is the area supporting most of the country, this being said demand is up causing the market to react (Beans are big menu item for Thanksgiving Day) . No issues in quality.

Market Trends: Week of 16 November 2015

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- The Palmetto/Ruskin fields are in full production.  FOB prices have fallen by several dollars again this week on all sizes.  However, this may be the low-water mark for FOB prices for the remainder of the year.  Growers do not forecast any dramatic increases in prices through December but we do see upward pressure on prices for the remainder of 2015.  Warmer than normal temperatures over the past several weeks has caused the Florida crop to come to maturity a little quicker than normal and anticipated.  This has caused a flush of supplies here at the beginning of the season but may result in less volume from these fields as we finish up the year.  Also, and maybe more importantly, as we have reported in past weeks, the Mexican yields are below average due to earlier weather conditions.  The West will have to go East to meet demand.  For how long and how much the West will have to go East will have large factor on Eastern FOB prices.  And finally, we are seeing increased demand nationwide for tomatoes since prices have been fallen.  How this demand responds to any future price fluctuation will also have a bearing on the direction and strength of any price changes.  Quality continues to be good.

Romas- Romas is the one tomato commodity to see higher FOB prices this week compared to last week.  Even though supplies continue to be tight in the East, the main reason for higher roma prices nationwide is the shortage of roma yields out of Mexican fields.  These low Mexican yields have been reported for several weeks.  Because of tight supplies on both coasts, we look for romas to continue to run higher compared to the other tomato categories for the remainder of the year.  Quality in the east is good.

Grapes- FOB prices have fallen substantially again this week on both bulk and pints.  Quality is good.

Cherries- FOB prices are down substantially again from last week.  Quality is improving and is now generally good.

Weather forecast- Palmetto/Ruskin- Daytime highs will be in the mid-80s with lows in the low to mid 60s.  Skies will be mostly sunny with little chance of rain through the weekend.  Immokalee- Partly cloudy skies with highs near 90 and lows in the mid to upper 60s.  Turning a little cooler later this weekend.  Little chance of rain.

West/Mexico

Rounds- CA growers have finished for the season.  The West is going to Florida to meet their demand for mature greens.  Nogales crossings should start next Tuesday.  Vine-ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and Nogales.  Cooler than normal weather has caused yields to suffer and volume at all crossings points is generally light.

Romas- The cool weather has cut severely into Baja crossings and orders are now being pro-rated.  Supplies are also tight at Nogales and McAllen.  We have previously reported on the abnormally low yields from these Mexican roma fields and we expect the lack of supplies will put upward pressure on romas for the remainder of the year.  The level of demand will be a large factor on future FOB prices.  Quality is variable.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality and corresponding FOB prices.  Grapes are crossing at Baja and Nogales but most repackers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Cherries- Limited supplies continue and there continues to be a wide range of prices due to a wide range of quality.  But like the grape tomatoes, most repackers are sourcing out of Florida due to pricing and quality issues.

Green Bell Pepper

East- Demand is stronger this week as we near the holidays.  The GA crop is finishing up and we are seeing quality issues in the form of wall and stem decay.  The Immokalee crop is looking much better.  FOB prices are slightly higher compared to last week with continued upward pressure due to the increased demand.
West- FOB prices are steady to higher this week compared to last week on all grades and sizes.  Cool weather is causing a dip in yields and continued upward pressure on prices will probably continue through the weekend.

Yellow Squash

East- FOB prices continue to be weak but are off the floor prices of last week by a couple of dollars.  Quality continues to be good.
West- Good volume continues to cross at Nogales.  Like the east, FOB prices continue to be weak but are off of the floor by a couple of dollars.  Quality is good.

Green Squash

East- Same report as yellow squash.
West- Same report as yellow squash.

Beans, Green

Georgia prices increased this week and will continue to increase through next week. The California market is much higher even though the demand is down.

Eggplant

East- FOB prices are steady to higher.  Quality is good.
West- FOB prices are steady but better supplies by the weekend may put downward pressure on those prices.  Quality is general good.

Jalapenos

East- FOB prices are generally steady and quality is generally good.
West- Supplies have become much tighter and FOB prices are higher this week.

Market Trends : Week of 09 Nov 2015

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- Weak national demand and increased supplies out of the Palmetto/Ruskin fields in Florida have finally caused FOB prices to fall to more normal levels.  Quality from these fields is looking good.  Sizing appears to be on the small size which may put upward pressure on the FOB prices for 5x6s in the next few weeks.  However, prices have fallen substantially for all sizes for next week.  Growers will begin harvesting our Immokalee fields within the next 2-4 weeks depending on weather.

Romas- Weak demand and more supplies have caused FOB prices to fall on all sizes again this week.  Quality is improving.

Grapes- Weak demand and better supplies have caused FOB prices to fall substantially on both bulk and pints.  Quality is improving.

Cherries- Quality is variable and FOB prices are reflecting this variableness.  However, all FOB prices are down substantially from last week.

Weather forecast- Palmetto/Ruskin- Daytime highs will be near 90 with lows in the lower 70s.  Chances of clouds and storms increase as we get closer to the weekend.  Immokalee- Same forecast as the Palmetto/Ruskin area but with a better chance of storms each day.

West/Mexico

Rounds- Rain Sunday night and Monday has caused the remaining CA growers to cease harvesting but they will probably resume for another week or so when the fields dry out.  We are seeing a wide range of quality and FOB prices.  However, all FOB prices are lower this week compared to last week primarily due to very weak demand.  Vine ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and Nogales.  Volume at all crossings points is generally light.  With the CA crop at its end and lighter than normal yields from the MX fields, FOB prices may rise in the next week or two if we see any increase in demand.

Romas- Demand is very weak.  Crossings continue at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  FOB prices are slightly lower due to the lack of demand.  Like the rounds, we may see an increase in FOB prices in the near future if there is an increase in demand.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality and corresponding FOB prices.  However, weak demand has caused all FOB prices to be lower again this week.  Grapes are crossing at Baja and Nogales.

Cherries- Weak demand and slightly better supplies have caused FOB prices to fall substantially for next week.  There continues to be a wide range of prices due to a wide range of quality.

Green Bell Pepper

East- The Immokalee crop has begun.  The GA crop has all but ended.  FOB prices are steady to higher.
West- FOB prices are higher this week compared to last week on all grades and sizes but we expect to see higher volume next week which should cause prices to fall after next week.

East- Immokalee fields have started.  FOB prices are lower on all grades.  Quality is good.

Eggplant

East- FOB prices are steady to higher.  Quality is good.
West- FOB prices are steady to lower with good quality.

Jalapenos

East- FOB prices are generally steady and quality is generally good.

Market Trends : Week of 02 Nov 2015

Note:  Finally some good news to report.  In the west, Hurricane Patricia weakened dramatically before it came on land and was mainly a rain event with relatively little damage reported.   In the east, the high water mark on tomato FOB prices has probably been reached as the price of rounds, grapes, cherries and romas are all lower this week compared to last week.  Very weak demand has also put downward pressure on prices.  Prices for next week are still above trigger points and Act of God clauses of most contracts but we can expect  that the new Palmetto/Ruskin fields will soon be producing enough supply to bring FOB prices to more normal levels.   We are seeing some improvement in quality but it is still variable and shelf-life is still suspect.  Therefore, we recommend that inventories continue to be kept as tight as possible as we continue to work through this situation.

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- Weak demand and a few more supplies out of Florida fields have caused the FOB prices of all sizes to fall slightly.  We look for prices to continue to fall during the month of November as more supplies come on-line out of the Palmetto/Ruskin fields.  Quality is improving but shelf-life is still suspect.

Romas- Quality continues to be variable.  Weak demand and slightly more supplies have caused FOB prices to fall on all sizes.

Grapes- Weak demand has caused FOB prices to fall on both bulk and pints.  Quality continues to be variable but is improving.

Cherries- Supplies continue to be tight as they have been for several months but demand has been weak.  FOB prices are currently down slightly from last week.  Quality is variable.

Weather forecast - Quincy- Partly cloudy skies with highs in the near 80 and lows near 60.   A chance of rain is being called for this weekend. Palmetto/Ruskin- Partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid to mid-60s.  A good chance of storms tomorrow.

West/Mexico

Rounds- All but 4 CA growers have finished harvesting and are only selling product from their rooms. FOB prices are generally steady for good quality 5x6s and are down on 6x6s and 6x7s. 5x6 sizing continues to be on the small side and Mexican product must be used for 4x5 and larger sizes.  Vine ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and Nogales.  Volume at all crossings points is generally light.  Demand is weak.

Romas- Demand is weak.  Supplies continue from CA but are tight.  Crossings continue at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  FOB prices are lower out of CA fields and at MX crossing points.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality and corresponding FOB prices.  However, weak demand has caused FOB prices to be generally lower this week.

Cherries- Supplies continue to be tight with a wide range of FOB prices depending on quality.  FOB prices for quality product are generally steady compared to last week.

Green Bell Pepper

West- FOB prices generally lower.  The Baja region finished earlier than normal this year.  Quality is good.

Market Trends : Week of 26 Oct 2015

Note:  As we have reported the past two weeks on tomatoes, short supplies and quality/shelf-life issues continue to be problematic and will be suspect until we can work through the situation that is the result of the weather and the normal transitional “gap” situation that we experience most every year during this time. We recommend that inventories continue to be kept as tight as possible as we work through this situation.  Most tomato contracts have reached their trigger points and Act of God clauses are in effect.  At this time it appears that it will not be until around the third week of November before enough volume is harvested out the new Central Florida fields to have an appreciable effect on supplies and the high FOB prices.   Thankfully, the market prices and quality of the other dry vegetable commodities have already responded in a positive way to better supplies from newer fields.

Tomatoes

East

Rounds- Supplies continue to tighten causing FOB prices to be higher this week on all sizes. Local fields in the mountains of TN, NC and SC experienced a frost/freeze Sunday night and for all practical purposes are finished for the season except for some clean-up/salvage harvesting.  As already reported, the fields in Quincy have started but volume is low and we expect supplies to remain tight out of that growing region.  New supplies out of the Palmetto/Ruskin area are expected to start as early as next week but we still forecast that the volume from that region will not be adequate to appreciably affect the FOB prices until the third week of November.

Romas- Supplies continue to be extremely tight and FOB prices are generally steady from last week.  Quality continues to be variable.

Grapes-  As  reported last week, our grape tomato fields along the SC coast were hit particularly hard by the heavy rains causing a sharp decrease in supplies.  Prices are generally steady from last week’s high FOB prices.   Quality continues to be variable.

Cherries- Supplies continue to be extremely tight as they have been for several months.  FOB prices are currently steady as demand is weak.  Quality is variable.

Weather forecast- Quincy- Mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid-80s and lows near 60.   A chance of rain is being called for the early part of next week. Palmetto/Ruskin- Mostly sunny skies with highs near 90 and lows in the mid to upper 60s.  Little chance of rain until the middle of next week.

West/Mexico

Rounds- The CA crops are coming to a close as only 2 or 3 growers continue to harvest.  Quality is variable and shelf-life is preventing sellers to ship East.  FOB prices are steady on all sizes.  5x6 sizing continues to be on the small side and Mexican product must be used for 4x5 and larger sizes.  Vine ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and now Nogales.  Volume at all crossings points is generally light.

Romas- Supplies continue from CA but are tight.  Crossings continue at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  As reported last week, volume out of the newer Mexican fields is down by as much as 50% compared to prior years and those fields have experienced rain.  Demand, however, is also very weak causing FOB prices to remain generally steady.

Grapes- We are still seeing a very wide range in quality.  FOB prices of the better quality are up sharply again this week.  Inferior product can continue to be purchased at a discount.

Cherries- Supplies continue to be tight with a wide range of FOB prices depending on quality.  FOB prices for quality product are generally steady to slightly higher compared to last week.

Green Bell Pepper

East- Most supplies now coming out of GA and we continue to see some quality issues out of those fields as a result of the recent weather.  Our Immokalee crop is a little slower coming on-line than first forecast but we now predict that we should start harvesting those new fields next week.  FOB prices this week are steady to lower on all sizes and grades.
West- We are seeing more volume this week from the desert growers and we expect that volume to continue which will put downward pressure of FOB prices.  FOB prices are already lower this week compared to last week.

 Green Beans

Beans are now available in Coachella, CA; supply is improving . Mexico will start shipping through Nogales around third week in November. Georgia is shipping new crop, but pricing is out of sight. Don’t expect the bean pricing to ease off too much, Thanksgiving is right around the corner.

Yellow Squash

East- FOB prices are lower this week.  We are seeing quality and shelf-life issues but quality is improving.  GA and northern FL fields are main sources in the east.
West- FOB markets are lower this week a good volume continues to cross at Nogales.

Green Squash

East- Similar to the yellow squash in the east, FOB prices are lower this week and quality is improving.
West- Market also lower in the west as good volume continues to cross at Nogales.

Cucumbers

East- Southern GA fields are the main source and a few have started to be harvested out of our Immokalee fields.  FOB prices of Super grade are steady while the prices for select are steady to higher.
West- Higher production and crossings at Nogales.  FOB prices of all grades and sizes are generally lower this week compared to last week.

Eggplant

East- FOB prices are steady to lower on all grades and sizes. Quality is good.
West- FOB prices are generally lower with better quality.  The quality of the Fresno product is not as good.

Jalapenos

East- FOB prices are generally steady to lower and quality is generally good.  GA is main sourcing area.
West- FOB prices generally steady.  Quality is good.

Market Trends : Week of 19 Oct 2015

Note:  Short supplies and quality/shelf-life issues continue to be problematic and will be suspect until growers can work through the situation that is the result of the weather that we reported on last week.  All of this is occurring during a time that we typically experience a “gap” situation as we transition to fields in Florida and South Georgia.

Tomatoes

East

•    Rounds- The two weeks of rain in the east has caused supplies of round tomatoes to be extremely tight and has caused quality and shelf-life to suffer.  New fields in Quincy have started but volume is low and we expect supplies to remain tight out of that growing region.  Local fields continue in the mountains of NC, SC and TN but all fields experienced heavy rain and yields are lighter as those crops are very close to ending and quality is suspect.  FOB prices of 5x6s and 6x6s are higher.  6x7s are steady to slightly lower.

•    Romas- Supplies continue to be extremely tight and FOB prices are higher compared to last week.  Quality continues to be variable.

•    Grapes- Grape tomato fields were hit particularly hard by the heavy rains which have caused supplies to be very tight.  As a result, FOB prices are up sharply on both bulk and pint flats. Quality is becoming more variable.

•    Cherries- Supplies continue to be extremely tight as they have been all summer.  However, FOB prices are currently steady as demand is weak.  Quality is variable.

•    Weather forecast- NC/TN Mountains- Mostly sunny skies with highs near 70 and lows in the 40s until the weekend.  Continued sunny then but much cooler with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s.  Quincy- Mostly sunny skies with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s.

West/Mexico

•    Rounds- The CA crops are coming to a close.  Several growers are already finished and others will be finishing up this week.  Only two growers will continue until the end of the month. Quality is variable and shelf-life is very suspect.  FOB prices are steady on all sizes.  5x6 sizing continues to be on the small side.  Vine ripes continue to cross at Otay Mesa, McAllen and now Nogales.

•    Romas- Supplies continue from CA but are tight.  Crossings continue at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  As reported last week, volume out of the newer Mexican fields is down by as much as 50% compared to prior years and those fields have experienced rain.  FOB prices are higher on all sizes.

•    Grapes- We are still seeing a range in quality and the range is getting wider.  FOB prices of the better quality are sharply higher this week.  Inferior product can continue to be purchased at a discount.

•    Cherries- Supplies continue to be tight with a wide range of FOB prices depending on quality.  FOB prices for quality product are stronger compared to last week.

Green Bell Pepper

East- Most supplies now coming out of GA with a few still available in NC.  Rains to both regions have caused quality and shelf-life issues.  Our Immokalee crop should begin sometime late next week.  FOB prices are generally steady.
West- Quality and volume have suffered due to the rains of last week. FOB prices are higher.

Beans, Green

California is experiencing a small increase in their supply, but process are still higher then usual. Supplies in the west will be tight until mid-October when the Coachella Valley will begin harvesting. Georgia’s harvest is currently underway as prices begin to increase slowly.

Yellow Squash

East- FOB prices are higher again this week.  We are seeing quality and shelf-life issues.  GA and northern FL fields are main sources in the east.  A few continue to be available in NC and SC.
West- FOB markets probably over-reacted on the low side when the Nogales crossings started last week.  Prices have rebounded higher this week.

Green Squash

East- FOB prices are stronger again this week.  The rains have caused quality and shelf-life issues.
West- Like the yellow market in the west, FOB prices have rebounded this week from last week’s low prices out of Nogales.

Cucumbers

East- FOB prices are generally higher.  Eastern NC fields are finishing up and southern GA fields are the main source.  Good quality can still be found but is becoming more variable.
West- FOB prices are higher this week.  Quality is variable and with FOB prices reflecting the variableness.

Eggplant

East- FOB prices are up slightly on the fancy grade but generally steady for the choice grade... Quality is generally good.
West- FOB prices are generally steady. We continue to see some quality issues at crossing points.

Jalapenos

East- FOB prices are generally steady and quality is generally good.
West- FOB prices generally steady.  Quality is good.

Market Trends : Week of 12 Oct 2015

A week of historical rains in the east coupled with the western fields also experiencing rains are causing markets of nearly all tomato and other dry vegetables commodities to be higher this week.  Quality and shelf-life of product will be suspect until we can work through this product.  All of this is occurring during a time that we typically experience a “gap” situation as we transition to fields in Florida and South Georgia.  We recommend that inventories be kept as tight as possible as we work through this situation.  Most tomato contracts have reached their trigger points and Act of God clauses are in effect.  We do not forecast any real relief for the market until the central and southern Florida fields begin to be harvested.  We expect the central Florida fields to start yielding product in mid-November and the southern fields to start during the first half of December.

Tomatoes

East

•    Rounds- Rain has fallen for nearly two weeks in all growing regions in the east.  The grape tomato fields in Beaufort, SC experienced 5 inches of rain in one day.  This rain across the region will affect the volume and quality.  New fields in Quincy have started but volume remains below average.  Local fields continue in the mountains of NC, SC and TN but all fields experienced rain and yields are lighter as those crops are very close to ending and quality is suspect.  FOB prices of 5x6s are higher.  Delivered prices will also be higher for the 6x6s and 6x7s.
•    Romas- Supplies continue to be very tight but romas are one commodity where FOB prices on all sizes are generally steady.  Quality continues to be variable.
•    Grapes- FOB prices are higher on both bulk and pint flats and we expect supplies to get tighter before new supplies come on line.  Quality is becoming more variable.
•    Cherries- Supplies continue to be extremely tight as they have been all summer.  However, FOB prices are currently steady as demand is weak.  Quality is more variable.
•    Weather forecast- NC/TN Mountains- Finally, little chance of rain for the rest of this week.  Temperature highs will be in the upper 70s and lows will be in the 50s.  Turning cooler this weekend.  Quincy- Sunny tomorrow but clouds for the rest of the week.  Little chance of rain.  Highs will be in the mid-80s with lows in the 60s.

West/Mexico

•    Rounds- Volume and sizing out of CA fields is dropping off dramatically as is the quality out of those fields.  Shelf-life is very suspect and it is unlikely that product can be shipped successfully to eastern markets.  FOB prices are higher on 5x6s due to decreased supply.  Vine ripes continue to cross from Baja and quality remains variable.  Vines ripes crossing over at McAllen are light but with better quality.  Crossings at Nogales continue this week but volume has still not completely ramped up.  There is upward pressure on all FOB prices both in CA and MX.
•    Romas- Supplies continue from CA but are extremely tight.  Crossings continue at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  Volume out of the newer Mexican fields is down by as much as 50% compared to prior years and those fields have experienced rain this week.  There is upward pressure on FOB prices on all sizes.
•    Grapes- We are still seeing a range in quality and the range is getting wider.  FOB prices of the better quality are higher again this week.

Rains to both regions will cause quality and shelf-life issues for the next ten days to two weeks.  Our Immokalee crop should begin within the next two weeks.   FOB prices are steady to higher.
West- Western fields have seen rain this week.  Volume continues to decrease as quality becomes more suspect.  FOB prices are higher.

Yellow Squash

East- FOB prices have been on the floor for the past several weeks but have moved up sharply as a result of the rains that have hit the squash fields.  We are already seeing quality and shelf-life issues.  GA and northern FL fields are main sources in the east.  A few still available in NC and SC.
West- FOB prices are down this week as Nogales crossings have increased.  We expect FOB prices to continue to fall.  Quality is variable but improving.

Green Squash

East- FOB prices are stronger again this week.  Like the yellow, quality has been good but the recent rains will cause quality and shelf-life to suffer.
West- FOB prices are steady to lower as volume crossing at Nogales is increasing.

Cucumbers

East- FOB prices are generally steady to higher.  Both the eastern NC and southern GA fields have experienced rain this week.  Quality has been good but will decline due to the rains.
West- FOB prices are steady to lower this week.  Quality is variable.

Eggplant

East- FOB prices are up slightly but are still at low levels. Quality is generally good.
West- Supplies have tightened and FOB prices are higher this week. We continue to see some quality issues at crossing points.

Green Beans

West - is experiencing a severe shortage due to hot temperatures. Until Coachella Valley begins in two-three weeks expect beans out of the West to remain tight. East coast supplies remain steady for now,  recent heavy rains will challenge quality and pricing.

Jalapenos

East- FOB prices are generally steady and quality is generally good.
West- FOB prices steady with upward pressures.  Quality is good.

Market Trends : Week of 5 Oct 2015

Tomatoes

East
  • Rounds- Rain has fallen for nearly a week in all growing regions in the east.  This will affect the volume and quality in the east for weeks to come.  Very cool weather is expected to follow the rains which will cause the older fields in the east to wind down quickly.  New fields in Quincy have started but with very low volume.  The rains are delaying  plantings further south in Florida which will cause our winter Florida crop to be behind schedule.   Local fields continue in the mountains of NC, SC and TN but yields are lighter as those crops are very close to ending and quality is suspect.  The Eastern Shore crop is being picked but yield there is light and has seen much rain this past week.  Because of the variable quality and shelf-life issues, we recommend that inventories be kept tight for the next several weeks.  All sizes are running on the smaller side.  FOB prices of 6x6s and 6x7s are steady but the price of 5x6s is higher.
  • Romas- Supplies continue to be very tight. FOB prices on all sizes are steady.  Quality continues to be variable.
  • Grapes- FOB prices are steady on bulk this week compared to last week and slightly higher on the 12/1pt flats.   Quality remains generally good.
  • Cherries- Supplies continue to be extremely tight as they have been all summer.  FOB prices are currently steady.  Quality continues to be variable but good quality can be found.
  • Weather forecast- NC/TN Mountains- A high chance of rain each day for the rest of the week. Turning colder with highs only in the 50s on Friday and lows in the upper 40s by early next week.  VA Eastern Shore- A high probably of rain or showers each day through the weekend.  Highs will only be in upper 60s on Thursday and Fridays with lows in the 50s for several nights starting over the weekend.
West/Mexico
  • Rounds- Volume out of CA fields is dropping off dramatically as is the quality out of those fields.  Shelf-life is very suspect.  Sizing remains on the small size.  FOB prices are steady for the better quality.  Lower prices can be found on lesser quality product.  Vine ripes continue to cross from Baja and quality remains variable.  Vines ripes crossing over at McAllen are light but with better quality.  Crossings at Nogales continue this week but with low volume as that season gets geared up.
  • Romas- Supplies continue from CA and crossings at Otay Mesa and McAllen.  Volume out of the newer Mexican fields appears to be down by as much as 50% compared to prior years.  FOB prices are up on the large size romas and steady on the medium size.
  • Grapes- We are still seeing a range in quality.  FOB prices of the better quality are higher this week.  Inferior product can continue to be purchased at a discount.

West- We are seeing declining volume and quality crossing from Baja.  FOB prices are up compared to last week.

Yellow Squash

East- Good supplies and slow demand are causing FOB prices to remain near the bottom. Quality has been good but we will see how the rains will affect quality in the near future.  GA and northern FL crops have started while NC and SC crops continue to produce.
West- FOB prices are slightly stronger again this week due to weaker supplies.  Quality is variable.

Slow volume is crossing at Nogales as that crop gets started.
